One survivor from Saturday
Andoni Iraola kept a single starter from the side that drew 0-0 with Fulham at the weekend. Ten changes for a Carabao Cup third-round tie says as much about the weekend as it does about the competition, and the Liverpool manager made no attempt to dress it up.
“We could see the other day that we lacked a bit of energy and we needed fresh legs,” he said. “I am happy because all the players have given us intensity and aggressiveness.”
Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield on Tuesday and are through to the fourth round. Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo scored the goals that put them in charge.

Gallagher’s header, then the shot
Conor Gallagher pulled one back for Tottenham with a header at the back post, and for a while Anfield had something to think about. Dominik Szoboszlai took it away from 30 yards.
The Hungary international had come off the bench. Iraola said the crowd reaction to him shooting from that range is not the reaction most players get.
“The three goals we scored were very good goals,” he said. “The origin of the first and second goals are also very important for us but the third goal is a worldie, it is outstanding. The thing with Dom is that before shooting, you are trusting he might score. With another player you are thinking it’s maybe too far but with Dom everyone is thinking he might score.”
The academy shift
Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha and James McConnell all started and all came off before the end. Nyoni was cramping. Ngumoha had nothing left. McConnell was in the same state.
Iraola treated that as the point rather than the problem. “When this happens, it’s because you’ve given us what you’ve got,” he said. “They have been very athletic, willingness to win their duels, making their presence felt. I was happy for them.”
Three days after failing to score against Fulham, Liverpool put three past Tottenham with a team Iraola had almost entirely rewritten.
