Six tackles for loss, and Washington never found a rhythm
Kids Day at Ford Field, and the noise never matched the scoreboard. Detroit beat the Washington Commanders 17-13 on Saturday afternoon in their second preseason outing. The score stayed tight. The game itself was not.
Detroit’s defense took control early and never really let go. Two sacks show up in the box score, but the real damage came with six tackles for loss and six pressures on the opposing quarterback. Washington never got its run game going. Jayden Daniels was pulled early, the Commanders’ staff refusing to leave their starter out there any longer than they had to.
Jackson Meeks shut the door late in the fourth. He ripped the ball away from the returner on a punt and forced the decisive turnover.

Josh Dobbs was awful for a quarter, then ran 50 yards
Dobbs made his first preseason start in a Detroit uniform. The opening spell was ugly. An interception, a fumble, no rhythm at all. Then he tucked the ball on a designed run and raced 50 yards to the end zone.
Luke Altmyer came on next. Nine completions from 13 attempts, 87 yards, but he also took four sacks. The offensive line started to fall apart as the drives wore on. The battle to back up Jared Goff is still wide open.
The run game kept things from cracking. Jacob Saylors, Raheem Blackshear and Trayveon Williams combined for 97 rushing yards on 30 carries. Williams punched in the ground score.
Detroit has been hunting a partner for Hutchinson for two years
Rookie Derrick Moore made a strong first impression. One sack, one pressure, one tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Moore and DJ Wonnum both showed up off the edge, with Skyler Gill-Howard doing his bit inside.
The secondary had a rougher night. Nick Whiteside was beaten in coverage more than once. Rookie Keith Abney II gave away an avoidable holding penalty and allowed several chunk plays. The defensive front did enough to hide the cracks.
Detroit wraps up its preseason next week.
