Lionel Carole is set for a fresh start at Caen
SM Caen are closing in on Lionel Carole. According to Foot Mercato, the 35-year-old left-back is due to sign a two-year deal with an option for a third. Free since his Kayserispor contract ran out in June, the Frenchman is coming home.
Five years after swapping Strasbourg for Turkey, he lands back in France. The catch: it is Ligue 3, the new third tier of the French pyramid.

A CV built for Ligue 3
Trained at Nantes, Carole has seen a bit of everything. Benfica, Troyes, Galatasaray, Sevilla, Strasbourg, then Kayserispor. Last season he still racked up 24 Super Lig matches, 23 of them as a starter. He knows the game, and then some.
The Caen he joins is bankrolled by Coalition Capital, the fund owned by Kylian Mbappe. Big ambitions, and no intention of lingering in the third tier.
A signing aimed squarely at promotion
Caen opened their Ligue 3 season on Friday by beating Valenciennes. Carole hands them experience for a squad built to climb. Nothing is signed and sealed just yet, but every arrow points one way.
