A move Brassier never wanted
Lilian Brassier is set to leave Stade Rennais. The centre-back is on the verge of joining Eintracht Frankfurt for 8.5 million euros plus add-ons, according to Foot Mercato. The 26-year-old is expected in Germany this weekend for a medical.
Brassier did not want to go. Under contract until 2029, he had only returned to his boyhood club 18 months ago. Franck Haise saw it differently. The Rennes boss had him behind his preferred starters in the centre-back pecking order, and Brassier eventually accepted that leaving was the cleanest way out with the window about to shut.

Rennes, Brest, Marseille, and still no settled home
Developed at Rennes, Brassier had a spell at Brest before heading back to Brittany a year and a half ago. In between came a loan to Marseille that did little for his reputation. He never nailed down a regular starting spot there.
Frankfurt offer something else. The Bundesliga, a club with plenty of European miles on the clock, and a chance to fight for a place in a squad that is also changing late in the window. The fee is modest for a 26-year-old centre-back with three years left on his deal.
Cash in, trim the wages, then find a replacement in four days
For the Breton club, the deal brings in money and frees up wages with only days left in the window. Rennes have already qualified for the Europa League league phase and are facing a packed season. Questions over defensive depth will come fast if nobody arrives behind him.
Haise has a few days to make the call.
