Ligue 1: Nice to operate on Moise Bombito again

Same shin, again

Moise Bombito is set for another operation. The Canadian defender at OGC Nice has been struggling with pain in his left shin since returning to training. Tests carried out earlier this week made the decision, according to Nice Matin, via Foot Mercato.

The Gym medical staff have ruled out conservative treatment in favour of surgery. He is expected to be sidelined for several months. Bombito had already missed Nice’s opening Ligue 1 game against Lorient last weekend because of the pain.

That shin has been a problem for a while. He broke it last October on the Monaco pitch. The injury ruled him out for the rest of the season with Nice.

A summer that promised something else

The 26-year-old defender did still make it back in time to play at the World Cup with Canada. He started in the round of 16 and the last eight, against South Africa and Morocco.

Nice had hoped to build around him this season. The numbers tell a different story: after arriving on the Cote d’Azur two years ago, Bombito has played only 29 league matches for the Eagles. Two seasons, less than a third of the possible games.

Nice’s back line is thinning out

The timing is a nightmare for Olivier Pantaloni. Nice’s defence is already without Laurent Abergel. Bombito’s return was supposed to bring some much-needed steadiness at the back.

The Gym now head into another campaign without a player who was meant to be central to it all.
