Ligue 1: Le Mans grab a point off Brest on their top-flight return

Seven minutes of joy at Marie-Marvingt

Fifty-five minutes gone. Mafouta bundled the ball over the line, Le Mans led Brest, and a stadium that had waited years for a night like this lost its mind.

Seven minutes later it was gone.

The 2026-27 Ligue 1 season opened 2-2 on Friday night. A point each, and a game nobody watching could call until the whistle.

Two leads, neither of them held

Le Mans came out of the blocks properly. Inside the first quarter-hour Selvik had already turned away Larouci and Buades. The tempo belonged to the promoted side.

Then Romain Del Castillo did what Brest do. One chance, one finish past Kocik, 1-0 on 31 minutes. The visitors had barely been in the game and were ahead in it.

Gueye pulled it level in first-half stoppage time. After the break Brest pushed up again, which left space behind, and Bourabaa found it with a clipped pass. Mafouta stayed calm. 2-1.

Doumbia equalised on 62, tapping in after Kocik had somehow kept out a Tousart header.

Kocik was the reason it finished 2-2

The last half-hour was a siege. Le Mans, still reeling from surrendering the lead so quickly, dropped deep and dug in.

Ajorque headed straight at Kocik. Rabillard hooked another Tousart effort off the line. Chotard’s late lob drifted the wrong side of the post. The Le Mans keeper was the best player on the pitch by a distance.

A draw against a side that was playing Champions League football two seasons ago is a result Le Mans would have signed for at kick-off. Brest will look at the chances they wasted and feel differently about it on the coach home.
