LaLiga: at 37, Aubameyang has Deportivo dreaming

LaLiga: at 37, Aubameyang has Deportivo dreaming

Four goals, two assists, four games

That is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s return since joining Deportivo La Coruna this summer. The promoted Galician side sit fourth, a position almost nobody had them in when the season opened.

The Spanish press has made up its mind already. Marca reckons “LaLiga has a new star”. Sport went further, writing that “what is happening with Aubameyang makes no sense”. Two papers with opposite leanings landing on the same verdict. On the other side of the Pyrenees they have started calling him Aura-Meyang.

The 88th minute that ended the fitness debate

At 37, questions about his legs were reasonable. They are harder to make now. His goal against Villarreal did the arguing for him: ball won back near halfway in the 88th minute, a straight run at goal, not one Yellow Submarine defender able to lay a hand on him. That late, at that age, it says plenty about how he has looked after himself.

Antonio Hidalgo made no attempt to be measured afterwards. “It’s absolute madness,” said the head coach. Spain is familiar ground for the striker too. His Barcelona spell in 2022 was brief but productive. He has come back as the main man rather than a useful extra option.

A promoted club that never behaved like one

Deportivo spent real money this summer and assembled a squad aimed at the top half rather than at survival. They play forward, with Mario Soriano and Luismi Cruz feeding the striker. Yeremay Hernandez, the academy jewel, is still troubled by pubalgia and has not been himself.

Which leaves the pace as the open question. Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have sustained a goal per game across a full LaLiga campaign. Aubameyang will cool off at some point. Fifteen goals still looks comfortably within range.
