Seattle Sounders draw 1-1 with the LA Galaxy in MLS

Football: Arriola rescues a point for Sounders at the Galaxy

Two minutes on, one tap-in

Paul Arriola had been on the pitch for two minutes when the ball arrived at his feet with the goal empty. He did not need longer. His 81st-minute finish gave the Seattle Sounders a 1-1 draw at the Los Angeles Galaxy overnight in Carson.

Jordan Morris built it. He drove in from the right side of the box, pulled JT Marcinkowski off his line and rolled the pass square. Arriola, on for the injured Dejan Joveljic, had the simplest job of his night.

Joveljic went off in the 79th minute holding his leg. Seattle signed him from Sporting Kansas City on August 25, three weeks after he had spent four seasons with the club he was facing on Saturday. Andrew Thomas made four saves behind him.

Reus scores, the Galaxy still cannot win

Marco Reus put the Galaxy in front from the penalty spot in the 44th minute after Paul Rothrock brought down Hirving Lozano inside the area. It was the German’s second goal in as many starts, which reads better once you know he had gone eleven matches without scoring before that.

Marcinkowski ended up making seven saves, and the Galaxy needed most of them. Los Angeles took the point after a 3-0 beating at Vancouver on Wednesday, so the mood around Dignity Health Sports Park is less about ambition than about repair work.

Joao Klauss came on in the 67th minute, his first appearance since April 18 following foot surgery. Getting him back cost the Galaxy an international roster slot bought from Minnesota United for $150,000 in general allocation money and a 2027 second-round draft pick.

Twelve matches and counting for Seattle

The Sounders have not won since May 16, when they lost 2-0 at home to this same Galaxy side. Twelve league matches since, eight defeats and four draws, the last four of those draws coming in a row. Seattle sit 13th in the West on 28 points.

Los Angeles are on 30 points and remain outside the ninth and final playoff place on a tiebreaker. Seattle are two points off the same cut line. Both clubs left Carson with a result that keeps them alive and solves nothing.
