MLB: Orioles shelve Kyle Bradish, his season all but over

Ninety million in July, the injured list in September

Two months after signing a five-year, $90 million extension, Kyle Bradish is on the shelf. Baltimore placed the right-hander on the 15-day injured list on Sunday with discomfort in his lower abdomen. There are not enough games left on the calendar for him to get back. At 30, his year is almost certainly finished.

Yaramil Hiraldo came up from Triple-A Norfolk to take the open roster spot. Also 30, he is 1-0 with a 5.87 ERA over seven relief outings this season, after a 4.58 mark across 18 appearances in his rookie year.

The numbers were already sliding

Bradish finishes at 7-14 with a 4.12 ERA in 29 starts. That line flatters the last two months of it.

Five earned runs or more in three of his final nine starts. Five times in that same stretch he could not get through the fifth inning. Whatever was wrong, the box scores had been hinting at it for weeks.

A medical file that keeps growing

This is familiar territory for him. Tommy John surgery in June 2024 cost him most of the following year, when he managed six starts in total. Now an abdominal problem gets added to the pile.

The talent was never the issue. The Los Angeles Angels took him in the fourth round in 2018, Baltimore picked him up a year later, and he reached the majors in 2022. Career line: 26-29 across 96 starts, a 3.67 ERA, 512 and two-thirds innings.

The Orioles committed nine figures in July. The first return on it is a 15-day injured list stint and an empty September.
