A quarter-final spot without serving a point
Marta Kostyuk is through to the quarter-finals in Guadalajara. She has not played a single point.
The Ukrainian, the top seed at the Mexican event, had a first-round bye. On Wednesday, Taylor Townsend pulled out of their second-round match because of illness. Walkover.
Kostyuk will now face the winner of Kayla Day and Liudmila Samsonova, the No 8 seed. Her tournament starts properly in the last eight.

Townsend exits five days after a career Slam
The withdrawal comes at a rough time for the American. Last Friday, she and Katerina Siniakova won the women’s doubles title at the US Open. That victory completed the career Grand Slam for the pair.
They had already lifted Wimbledon in 2024, the Australian Open in 2025 and Roland Garros this year. Four majors, four surfaces, job done in New York.
Elsewhere in the draw, Iva Jovic backed up her seeding. The reigning champion, the No 2 seed, beat Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 7-6 (5), 6-4. Magdalena Frech, seeded seventh, saw off Caroline Dolehide 6-4, 6-3.
Six break points faced, five saved, in Sao Paulo
At the other WTA event this week, Teodora Kostovic made a statement. The Serbian was the first player through to the quarter-finals at the SP Open after beating ninth seed Darja Semenistaja 6-4, 6-1. She saved five of the six break points she faced.
It was her first quarter-final on the main tour.
The rest of the day was spent finishing a first round delayed by rain. Paula Badosa, Solana Sierra, Anna Blinkova, Eva Lys, Kaitlin Quevedo and Alina Charaeva all got through. Dominika Salkova pulled off the upset, beating sixth seed Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 7-5, 6-1.
