The leaders are toppled for the first time
Elversberg lost. It was their first Bundesliga defeat of the season. The newly promoted side went down 1-2 at home to Bayern Munich on Sunday at the URSAPHARM-Arena an der Kaiserlinde.
Elversberg went into this third round sitting top of the table. Two matches, two wins, seven goals scored. Leverkusen had been beaten 3-2 at home, then a 4-3 win was hauled out at Mönchengladbach. Nobody saw that start coming.
Bayern ended the run. They did not do it the easy way.

Lennart Karl put Munich ahead with a close-range finish.
Maurice Krattenmacher levelled after the break. Elversberg believed. For about 20 minutes, anyway.
Harry Kane put Bayern back in front with 18 minutes left in normal time. Second goal of the match, last goal of the match. The England captain is doing exactly what he was signed to do: scoring when the game tightens up and nobody else can find a way through.
Three points that put Bayern back on track
Munich had come off a 0-0 draw at Schalke. A rare slip for a side that had smashed Stuttgart 5-1 in the league and Bodø/Glimt 5-0 in the Champions League this week.
This win does not wipe away the questions raised by the goalless draw in Gelsenkirchen. It just pushes them aside for now. Bayern move back up to fourth. Elversberg drop to sixth.
For the promoted side, the picture is still a decent one. Six points from three matches, only one defeat, and it came against Bayern. Lukas Petkov remains the team’s top scorer. The fixtures will get tougher, but nothing in this match suggests the momentum has gone.
For Munich, the read is simpler. A trip to a newly promoted club, a goal conceded, and a match they had to grind out until the final quarter of an hour. This is not exactly a stroll through autumn.
