Football: Ajax snap up free agent Julian Brandt

A free transfer, and Ajax beat the Premier League to it

Ajax got their man on Friday. The Dutch side confirmed the signing of Julian Brandt, the Germany international arriving on a free transfer with no fee changing hands. He has put pen to a three-year deal that runs until June 2029.

Brandt had been sitting without a club since his Borussia Dortmund contract lapsed. He was hardly short of suitors, either. Leeds United had been out front in the chase, Fulham were sniffing around too. Ajax moved fast and shut the door on both.

Seven years in black and yellow

Dortmund was home for a long time. Brandt joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019 for around 25 million euros and racked up more than 300 appearances there. Now 30, he leaves the Bundesliga for the first time in his career.

The Eredivisie hands him a clean slate. Regular minutes, a louder voice in the dressing room, the kind of senior role that had started slipping away from him in Germany.

Ajax are playing a longer game

The club wants its perch back at the top of Dutch football, and a player with this much European mileage fits the plan. Brandt has lived the Champions League nights, the ones that swing whole seasons. That experience is the entire point of the deal.
