NFL football on the field, Packers running back Josh Jacobs news

NFL: Packers RB Josh Jacobs back at practice, set to play

Jacobs returns to the practice field

Josh Jacobs is back with the Packers. The running back took part in practice on Wednesday and is expected to play Sunday at Detroit, a first look at him in uniform after weeks away from the team.

Green Bay took him off the commissioner’s exempt list on Monday. He had served a six-game suspension tied to an offseason misdemeanor battery arrest. The league is not done with him, though. Jacobs remains under NFL investigation for a possible personal conduct policy violation.

He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery and criminal damage to property after a May arrest outside Green Bay. The plea terms reportedly include no contact with his accuser, counseling, supervision by criminal justice officials and restitution.

A ground game that needs him

Coach Matt LaFleur said Jacobs kept training while he was away, but that something was missing. “He’s been training, but he’s missed the exposure to football,” LaFleur said.

The Packers (4-2) arrive in Detroit on a three-game winning streak, and they have done it with almost no rushing offense. They rank last in the NFL at 59.8 rushing yards per game. MarShawn Lloyd leads the team with 122 yards on 48 carries, about 2.5 yards a try.

Jacobs is 28 and spent his first five seasons with the Raiders. He ran for 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024, then 929 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. A back with that production would transform a run game this thin. The Lions (3-2) will see the Packers’ rushing numbers and plan for Jacobs to change them.
