Five snaps, then a month out
Omar Cooper Jr. has played five offensive snaps in the NFL. He is now set to miss at least four games because of what happened during them.
The Jets are placing the rookie wide receiver on injured reserve, NFL Network reported on Saturday. The ankle injury he picked up in the first quarter of New York’s season opener at Tennessee kept him out of practice for the entire week, and the club has stopped waiting for it to clear.

A first-round pick with one catch to his name
Cooper was taken 30th overall in April, right at the end of the first round, on the strength of a college season that left little room for argument. He caught 69 passes for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns across 16 games for Indiana, and the Hoosiers went through that year unbeaten on their way to a national championship.
His professional file currently reads one target, one catch, 30 yards. The reception came in the 23-10 win over the Titans last Sunday, shortly before he left the field. Four games is the minimum stay on injured reserve, which puts his earliest possible return in Week 6. Rookie receivers who lose a month of September rarely get back the timing they lost with it.
The Jets are thin on the other side too
The timing works against New York on both sides of the ball. They host Green Bay on Sunday in their home opener without safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, ruled out with a groin injury sustained on the sixth play of that same game in Tennessee.
So the Jets enter Week 2 at 1-0, which is the part they will want to talk about, and without their first-round receiver and their most decorated defensive back, which is the part they will be asked about. Whatever role had been drawn up for Cooper in September now belongs to October at the earliest.
