France squad: Jeremy Jacquet named in preliminary list

Zidane opens the door for Jacquet

Jeremy Jacquet is in Zinedine Zidane’s preliminary squad. The news comes from L’Equipe. The 21-year-old Liverpool defender could now be in line for his senior France debut in the new manager’s first camp.

The timing makes sense. Jacquet left Rennes this summer for 70 million euros. He settled quickly at the Reds. On Saturday against Fulham (0-0), he cleared one off the line and put in a defensive display that turned heads. England noticed.

A Premier League pipeline

The new France staff is not stopping there. Enzo Le Fee, the Sunderland midfielder, is also in the preliminary group. So is Brighton defender Olivier Boscagli. Lucas Da Cunha, formerly of Como, completes this wave of overseas-based talent.

Zidane is widening his lens. He is looking to the English top flight, where several French players are stepping up far from Ligue 1.

Nothing is done yet

A preliminary squad is not a call-up. Jacquet still has work to do. His time at Liverpool is still fresh, and the relentless schedule brings a new physical load for a player his age.

Zidane’s first squad is due on Friday. A call-up would speed up an already rapid rise: Rennes, Liverpool, France, all in a matter of months.
