Ghana: Inaki Williams retires from international football after 28 caps

28 caps and a farewell

Inaki Williams will not wear the Ghana shirt again. The Athletic Bilbao forward confirmed his international retirement on Friday, after 28 appearances and two goals for the Black Stars.

“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end. I leave happy, proud and knowing I gave everything every time I wore this shirt,” he wrote.

The record boils down to three big stages: two World Cups and one Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana colours.

A decision rooted in identity

Williams’ road to Ghana was never an ordinary one. Born and raised in Spain, capped by Spain, he then switched allegiance to his parents’ homeland and turned that change of sporting nationality into a statement about who he is as much as a football decision.

His retirement message says so plainly. “Ghana has given me far more than football. It allowed me to come home, feel even closer to my roots and feel the huge pride of representing my country.”

Two goals in 28 matches was never going to set pulses racing. His presence carried a different sort of weight in a Ghana squad still rebuilding.

Bilbao get a full-time forward back

He thanked the supporters and promised to stay behind the team. “Ghana will always be part of me. I will keep backing the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am. Medaase. Always Ghana.”

Athletic Bilbao pick up a very practical bonus. No more long international windows, no more cross-continental travel, one forward available all season at an age when recovery counts twice over.
