Golf: Hossler’s 61 grabs Wyndham lead as playoff clock ticks

Hossler goes low at Sedgefield

Beau Hossler needed a week like this. He opened the Wyndham Championship on Thursday with a nine-under 61 at Sedgefield Country Club, matching the best start of his PGA Tour career and grabbing a share of the first-round lead in Greensboro.

Ben James kept pace, eagling both of the course’s par 5s to sit alongside Hossler at the top. For Hossler, though, the number carries extra weight. He arrived at the regular-season finale outside the FedExCup Playoff bubble, and only a strong week keeps his season alive past Sunday.

Playoffs or bust

The Wyndham is the last stop before the postseason field is set, and Sedgefield tends to reward players who can go low in bunches. Hossler did exactly that, riding a run of birdies that turned a routine Thursday into a statement.

Cameron Young returns as defending champion after his breakthrough win here a year ago, and the leaderboard behind the leaders stayed crowded into the evening. Three more rounds will decide who plays on and who packs up for the winter.
