Detroit settles on a decision-maker for the season
The Red Wings have named Shawn Horcoff interim general manager. The move was announced during the day, just days before training camp opens.
Horcoff, 47, knows the place well. He has been with the organization for 10 years. Promoted to assistant GM in 2022, he also runs the Grand Rapids Griffins, the club’s AHL affiliate.
“As our process continues to find the best possible leader for the Red Wings’ hockey operations, I thank Shawn for accepting this role,” owner Chris Ilitch said. “His knowledge of our organization and the breadth of his experience give us a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead.” Ilitch said Horcoff has “the authority to make decisions in the best interests” of the club.

A former player with 1,008 games on the clock
Born in Trail, British Columbia, Horcoff played 1,008 NHL games across 15 seasons with Edmonton, Dallas and Anaheim. He also represented Canada on several occasions, helping them to two world titles.
The club also confirmed Steve Yzerman’s new role, with the franchise icon now serving as senior adviser to the governor and CEO. Yzerman stepped down as GM in July after seven seasons.
Detroit also gave an update on its search for a permanent GM. “We have held in-depth talks with talented executives over the past two months,” the club said, adding that it is happy with the quality of the candidates. Horcoff is among those in the frame for the full-time job.
The Larkin issue is waiting on the desk
The next GM will inherit an immediate headache. Dylan Larkin, the team’s highest-paid player, asked to be traded this summer. So far, nothing has changed. The forward will report to camp, but without the “C”: he has been stripped of the captaincy.
The Red Wings open the regular season on October 2 at home against the New York Rangers. The franchise has not reached the playoffs in 10 years.
