Denver, Friday night. St. Louis were trailing 6-4 heading into the ninth. Thomas Saggese worked a walk off Jordan Romano, then Jose Fermin reached on a throwing error. Ivan Herrera stepped in with two aboard and a 1-2 count against him.
The catcher crushed the next slider 430 feet to center. Three runs on one swing, 7-6 Cardinals. Oliver Marmol watched it from the clubhouse. The manager had been tossed back in the sixth by home-plate umpire Doug Eddings, after coming out of the dugout to argue a pitch clock violation called on Justin Bruihl before he had thrown a pitch.

71-71, and still hanging around
The win pulled St. Louis back to .500 at 71-71. That record does not scream contender in early September. In the current National League picture it moves the board anyway: the Cardinals jump Miami and sit three games back of Arizona for the last Wild Card spot.
Cade Winquest picked up his first big league win, working 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Riley O’Brien shut the door in the ninth for save number 36.
Colorado had this one under control
The Rockies (54-87) ran the night for eight innings. Andre Pallante left the mound after five with one run allowed and a 4-1 cushion behind him. Then it flipped, and Hancel Rincon, making his major league debut out of the St. Louis bullpen, took the damage.
Cole Carrigg hit an inside-the-park home run, which almost nobody does anymore, and added a triple. TJ Rumfield answered with his 15th homer of the year, plus a triple and a single. Connor Norby chipped in two hits. Enough to build a two-run lead. Not enough to get the last three outs.
