145 million euros, and a question about how to use it
Thierry Henry spent his Sky Sports slot on Friday talking about the most expensive winger Liverpool have ever bought, and his verdict came down to one thing. It depends entirely on how they use him.
“With Barcola, the key is knowing how to use him. Can you create one-on-one situations? And can you get him into counter-attacks? Because he is lightning quick,” Henry said.
Two situations, then. The isolated duel and the transition. Bradley Barcola built his name at PSG on exactly those, and a system that removes them removes most of what Liverpool paid for.

The defensive shift Henry does not want to see
He went further, and aimed it straight at Andoni Iraola. “Should he defend more than he attacks? That could be counter-productive for him,” said the former Under-21 boss.
The context makes it sting. Liverpool paid 145 million euros to take Barcola out of Paris, tied him down to 2031, and made him the second-most expensive signing in the club’s history. Turning that into a tracking-back job would be a strange use of the money.
His departure was messy in its own right. PSG left him out of the squad in August before Luis Enrique publicly explained away the sale. What arrives at Anfield is a player who needs rhythm and belief back more than he needs another instruction sheet.
Henry did flag one gap. “Barcola needs to improve his finishing. If he does that, a lot of teams will struggle to stop him.” Pace gets you past a full back in England. It does not get you goals.
Carragher is looking at the whole squad instead
Alongside him in the studio, Jamie Carragher welcomed what Barcola brings to English football, calling it another dose of magic for the league.
