Lars Gindorf scored three times. A hat-trick in a match where the visitors were banging them in at a pace the Bremen amateurs simply could not live with.
Hemelingen did at least get on the scoresheet. A consolation goal, snatched against a team that already had one foot in the next round.

For Hannover 96, the job was simple: get through without fuss. The club has a strange bond with this competition. It won it in 1992 while still in the second division, knocking out several top-flight sides before beating Borussia Monchengladbach on penalties in the final. Thirty-four years on, that remains the brightest line on the club’s CV.
Nine goals in a match does not tell you much about a team’s true level. It mostly just keeps you off the Saturday casualty list.
