Premier League: Glasner says Forest outburst was meant to help

“It was much louder outside than inside”

Oliver Glasner has explained what he was doing when he lit into his Nottingham Forest players after the defeat at Brentford. The intention, he says, was positive. Forest have won once all season and sit 19th, with four defeats in their last five.

After the game the Austrian went off twice, once to Sky Sports and again in the press conference. “It’s now time that we change things, that I change things,” he said then, adding that he may have made “too many compromises” and that if the players do not buy in, a sixth manager since the start of last season will arrive.

Ahead of Saturday’s game against Manchester City, he described the reaction as “a good training week” and said “it was much louder outside than I felt it was inside.” He insisted he did not attack anyone directly. “If I feel I need to shake things up, then I will.”

Details stay in Las Vegas

Glasner would not say what has changed in the dressing room. “What happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas,” he said. He did concede he is doing more talking, both with the group and with individual players, and always, he said, in a positive way.

His reasoning is that repeating the same post-match line, “good start, well played, missed chances, making mistakes, losing,” was not working. He does not think the performances have been disastrous, only that “some bits are missing,” and he asked whether the problem is focus or concentration if mistakes keep repeating. His culture pitch was blunt: “We are not a spa and wellness hotel, but we are also not the military.”

Forest host City on Saturday, kick-off 5.30pm. Glasner says he is still positive: “We’re not far away from getting what we all want.”
