A match full of twists
Germany and the Netherlands played out a 1-1 draw on Thursday night in the opening game of the Nations League. Lukas Nmecha put Germany ahead in the 32nd minute from a Karim Adeyemi cross. Cody Gakpo levelled late on for the Dutch. Final score: 1-1.
Yet the Netherlands were far superior in the numbers. They had 22 shots to 10, 12 corners to 1, and an expected goals total of 3.11 to Germany’s 1.50. Two Dutch goals were ruled out during the game: one from Virgil van Dijk, the other from Sem Meerdink.

The goal causing the uproar
Germany’s opener did not go unnoticed. As Adeyemi delivered the cross for Nmecha, Bryan Brobbey was lying on the turf, clearly struggling with a hamstring problem. Germany slowed the play down for a moment, then realised the referee was not going to stop the match. They sped up, scored, and drew furious protests from the Dutch bench.
The game also saw two injury setbacks for Germany. Jamal Musiala picked up a problem in the warm-up and was replaced by Nadiem Amiri before kick-off. Kai Havertz then went off in the 30th minute with a muscle issue, with Ibrahim Ebnoutalib coming on.
A rough first outing for Klopp
This draw was Jürgen Klopp’s first match in charge of the Mannschaft. It was hardly a calm start, with controversy on one side and the treatment room filling up on the other. Germany will need to find some answers fast before the next round of fixtures in this four-game format.
