NFL: Geno Smith perfect on one drive as Jets blank Steelers

Seven throws, seven completions, then his night was over

Geno Smith took one offensive series in Pittsburgh on Friday night. It was enough.

The New York Jets quarterback marched his side 69 yards on 10 plays, the last of them a throw over the middle to Jelani Woods, who had nobody near him and jogged the final 13 yards into the end zone. Smith: 7 of 7, 65 yards, no turnovers. Then he handed it over and watched.

New York left Pennsylvania with a 17-0 win and a 1-1 preseason record.

Two picks for Howard while Rodgers watches again

Three more quarterbacks got reps for the Jets. Cade Klubnik looked the best of them at 10 of 14 for 75 yards. Brady Cook closed it out in the fourth with a 31-yard connection to Quincy Skinner Jr., who led all receivers with four catches for 47.

Pittsburgh’s night was uglier. Aaron Rodgers sat for a second straight game. Will Howard started and threw two interceptions, finishing 10 of 15 for 74 yards. Drew Allar put up more volume, 11 of 23 for 110, without much to show for it. Kaleb Johnson led the ground game with 39 yards on 10 carries. The Steelers are also 1-1, though nobody in that building will be quoting the record.

Bo Nix is back, and Denver needed to see it

Carolina won 34-17 in Jacksonville. Bryce Young took two series and went 5 of 6 for 49 yards, the second drive ending with a Jonathon Brooks one-yard run. Kenny Pickett handled the rest, 15 of 25 for 137 and a score. The Panthers move to 2-1.

Green Bay beat Denver 33-13. Jordan Love, also on a one-series night, ran a 12-play, 63-yard drive and finished it with an 11-yard touchdown to MarShawn Lloyd. Trey Smack hit four field goals, one from 59.

The scoreline was not the point in Denver. Bo Nix played for the first time since fracturing an ankle: two series, 6 of 9 for 76 yards, a 21-yard touchdown to R.J. Harvey, and Wil Lutz nailing a 53-yarder before the half. Everything else about the night can wait.
