Tennis: Gea sees off Mensik to reach the Shanghai quarters

The Frenchman keeps dreaming in Shanghai

Arthur Gea just keeps going. The Frenchman, ranked 56th, reached the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters 1000 on Tuesday by beating Czech Jakub Mensik, the world No. 15, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4.

At 21, Gea is playing the main draw of a Masters 1000 for the first time and is far exceeding expectations. In the third round he had already beaten world No. 4 Ben Shelton, runner-up at the last US Open. Before this week, he had never beaten a top-10 player.

A run of results building since the summer

The quarter-final crowns a season in full acceleration. Gea won the Granby Challenger in July, then reached a final in Los Cabos the following week on the main tour. At the US Open he made the last 16 through qualifying, with six wins along the way.

The week before Shanghai, he reached the last 16 again, this time in Beijing. That consistency earns him a place in the world’s top 50 on Monday.

Davidovich or Hurkacz for a semi-final spot

Next he faces the winner of the match between Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich, ranked 26th, and Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, ranked 34th. A win would open the door to a Masters 1000 semi-final, a first for the young Frenchman.
