Three hits, all singles, seven scoreless
Arizona got one runner past first base all night against Kevin Gausman. That was the story of Monday in Phoenix, where the Chicago Cubs walked away 7-0.
Gausman went seven scoreless innings. Three hits, none for extra bases, one walk, six strikeouts. His record climbs to 7-11 in what was his fourth start since the Cubs picked him up at the deadline.
The one threat came in the fourth. Corbin Carroll walked, then stole second and third with two outs. Geraldo Perdomo grounded out and that was the end of it.
Ryan Zeferjahn and Caleb Thielbar finished the job. Chicago’s sixth shutout of the year.

Two swings in the sixth and the game was gone
For five innings this was still a ballgame. The Cubs led 2-0 off a Pedro Ramirez triple, the rookie’s first big contribution of the night, and a Seiya Suzuki double.
The sixth ended it. Merrill Kelly departed after a two-out single by Ramirez, Taylor Clarke came in, and Michael Conforto put his second pitch 431 feet into right field. Carson Kelly went back-to-back immediately, 392 feet to left. Three runs in the inning, 5-0.
Conforto also had a double and a single. He has gone deep in consecutive games and in three of his last eight. Chicago has 12 home runs across its last four.
Ian Happ’s RBI double and a Nico Hoerner sacrifice fly tacked on two more in the seventh.
Ninth shutout loss of the year for the Diamondbacks
Merrill Kelly (8-12) allowed three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. His lineup gave him nothing back: five hits total, every one a single.
Arizona had taken three of its previous four. That run evaporated fast. The Diamondbacks are 3-4 since second baseman Ketel Marte went down.
Chicago has now scored 26 unanswered runs across two games, the streak starting after Seattle put up the first two runs in Sunday’s 19-2 blowout. The Cubs are 4-0 against Arizona this season.
