An inheritance, burned
One hundred million euros. That is the number Gennaro Gattuso reached for when DAZN Italia asked him about Nuno Tavares after Lazio’s 2-2 draw with AC Milan. The Lazio boss does not do half measures. “I’ve always said Nuno Tavares is a Real Madrid-level player,” he began, which was the gentle part.
Then came the metaphor, one he admits he had already tried out on his assistant. “It’s like his parents had passed away and left him 100 M€… He burned it all in five years. He could easily have spent 10 years at Real Madrid with the quality he has.”
Read it twice. That is not praise. That is regret, said out loud, on camera.

A CV that gives the line its sting
The Portuguese left-back’s route explains why the comment landed. Benfica academy, then Arsenal, where a regular place never quite materialised. Marseille after that. Then Rome, where he has finally become a fixture down the left.
That drift is the capital Gattuso means. Plenty of coaches have rated Tavares. Few kept him. Years went by with the talent obvious and the output patchy, and in his manager’s telling the 100 M€ is simply the time nobody can get back.
Where it leaves him
Lazio held Milan at home and their left-back did his job. Gattuso treats that as a floor, not a ceiling.
No coach invokes Real Madrid in front of the cameras to settle a player down. Whether Tavares holds that line once the quotes stop circulating is the only question worth asking.
