Ligue 1: Lens lose Ganiou for weeks after knee surgery

Back for one day, then the operating table

Ismaelo Ganiou’s comeback lasted a single training session. The Lens defender rejoined the group on Thursday, felt fresh discomfort in his left knee, and had minor surgery on Friday morning. The club says the operation went well and that he will be out for several weeks.

The 21-year-old was hurt in Lens’s 3-1 win at Troyes last Saturday. He missed Wednesday’s trip to Club Brugge, where Lens lost 3-0 in the Champions League, and had been lined up for Saturday’s visit of Paris FC at 8:45pm.

A defence that keeps losing bodies

Ganiou signed a contract through 2030 and had become a regular in the Lens back line. He was among the players pre-selected for Zinedine Zidane’s first France squad, though he did not win a cap in the autumn window.

The timing hurts. Jonathan Gradit is only just back after almost a year out with a broken tibia and fibula, and Samson Baidoo has returned from a thigh problem suffered in pre-season. Polish defender Maik Nawrocki, signed in the summer, has been sidelined since late August with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

A slow season for the champions of the cup

Lens finished second in the league last season and won the first Coupe de France in their history. This year has been tougher. They sit eighth in Ligue 1 under Yannick Cahuzac, who replaced Dino Toppmoller after six official games, and have lost both of their last two Champions League matches.
