Richard edges ahead in Phoenix
Less than two tenths. That is the entire cushion Fred Richard carries into day two of the men’s all-around at the US Championships in Phoenix. The 22-year-old, competing out of Michigan, sits top on 84.326 points after the opening day. Danila Leykin shadows him on 84.173, with Shane Wiskus lurking on 83.207.
Nothing is settled. A margin that slim means day two turns on the tiniest details, a wobble here, a stuck landing there.

Two penalties he will want back
Richard should be further clear. He handed back ground with two separate three-tenth deductions. The first came for wearing an illegal singlet instead of pommel tights. The second for saluting in the wrong direction after his pommel horse dismount. Small errors, real cost.
He still lit up the floor, where his 14.758 was the best score of the night. A launchpad he can work from, penalties or not.
The national title still eludes him
A team bronze medallist at the Paris 2024 Games, Richard has never worn the US champion’s crown. It is the one line missing from his CV. He knows it, and his Michigan staff will not let him forget it.
