Formula 1: The new rules set-up and the first moves in the market
The opening stage of the 2026 season is all about the impact of the new technical regulations. Mechanical glitches spotted in testing have already pulled the spotlight onto the sport’s governing bodies. At the same time, the fight for staff and drivers is beginning to heat up. More than 50% of the grid are out of contract. Negotiations are being kicked off by the agents. Lewis Hamilton’s future with Ferrari is one of the files now under review.
If the current options are confirmed quickly, the top teams’ line-ups would be locked in. The biggest question in the market still centres on Max Verstappen. He has publicly floated the idea of walking away from racing. The pundits are split: is this just a negotiating ploy as the rulebook shifts, or a genuine possibility? The documented alternatives are a stay at Red Bull, a year out, or opening talks with Mercedes.

Formula 1: Contract erosion and a shortage of replacements
A major overhaul of the driver market is still possible. The cases of Fernando Alonso, Franco Colapinto and Esteban Ocon all carry fragile medium-term prospects. If several veteran names were to step aside at once, the whole chain of succession would need to be torn up and rewritten. There simply would not be enough ready-made replacements outside Formula 1.
That shortage would push teams towards keeping drivers who are already under pressure, such as Esteban Ocon, or bringing back experienced hands like Yuki Tsunoda. Right now, the feeder series point to just two drivers who fully fit elite-level standards. Rafael Camara has the backing of the Ferrari Driver Academy. What matters next is how much he can sharpen his Formula 2 numbers. Leonardo Fornaroli has the momentum of a recent title and the added value of McLaren’s approved TPC testing programme.
More Formula 2 data is still needed, on the stopwatch and on the spreadsheet. So far there has only been one head-to-head meeting this season. Any serious alternatives will depend on how those numbers move over the next rounds.
