Liverpool close the Slot era and bet on Andoni Iraola
Just days after confirming Arne Slot’s departure, Liverpool are already moving on. The Merseyside club have reached an agreement with Andoni Iraola, the Bournemouth boss this season, to take charge of the first team.
Slot’s exit, confirmed on 30 May, came with surprising speed. Even after winning the 2025 Premier League title, the 2025/2026 campaign ultimately tipped the scales. Patchy results, plus heavy spending that never quite paid off, pushed the board to act.
In a statement, the hierarchy said they wanted to kick-start a new cycle and bring fresh ambition back to a club that still aims for the top in England and across Europe.
Iraola’s work at Bournemouth has convinced
Since arriving at Bournemouth, Iraola has quickly changed the look of the side. Under his watch, the English club finished sixth in the Premier League, sealing a historic Europa League place and a first in the club’s history.
That body of work, built on intensity and clear structure, drew attention from several major European clubs. So much so that for weeks he was seen as the clear front-runner to replace Arne Slot.
Very quickly, the Spanish coach’s name became a serious internal option. According to multiple aligned reports, including Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have struck a principle agreement with the Spaniard, who has given the green light to move to Anfield.

Out of contract with the Cherries and keeping his cards close to his chest, Iraola now looks set for a challenge on a completely different scale. Liverpool are coming off a mixed 2025/2026 season, finishing fifth and sneaking into the Champions League by just three points over Bournemouth.
