Pierre Sage is finally about to land the job he has been chasing, with Crystal Palace ready to seal it
Football has a habit of moving at ridiculous speed. Barely a few weeks ago, Pierre Sage was the face of a rebuild at RC Lens. Now the French coach is on the verge of getting what so many of his countrymen dream about and never quite reach: a Premier League dugout.
Latest reports say Crystal Palace are close to wrapping up a full agreement with the Artois club for the 47-year-old. Talks have moved fast in recent days, and all signs point to Sage heading across the Channel.

A move that looked inevitable
Since news broke of his split with RC Lens at the start of last week, there was never much doubt about where this was heading. Palace had already made real progress in talks, and their interest was never just a quick probe.
Behind the scenes, Sage had already reached an understanding with the London club. The only thing left was to sort out the deal with Lens. After several days of negotiations, the sides are now close to a final agreement.
For the Frenchman, this is a huge step. The Premier League is still the biggest, loudest and probably toughest stage in football. For a coach who has built his career step by step, without taking shortcuts, this feels like both a reward and a fresh test.
Crystal Palace are backing the rise
Palace’s choice is no accident. The London club have been in a strong spell and still carry real ambition. They wanted a manager who could give them a clear identity, strong tactical standards and the ability to push a squad on.
Sage fits that brief neatly.
His work in recent seasons has earned him a solid reputation in French football. His structure, man-management and reading of the game have impressed far beyond Ligue 1.
The deal in London also shows the faith Palace are putting in him. Sage is expected to sign through to 2029, with an extra year as an option. That’s not a short-term fix. It’s a clear sign he is seen as a key part of the club’s project.
There is also a major pay rise in the package. His new salary would be close to four times what he was earning in the north of France.
Lens turn an important page
For Lens, this ends a short but intense chapter. Sage arrived with high expectations and will have spent only one season in charge of Les Sang et Or.
Even so, that season left its mark. Through results, silverware and collective progress, he helped keep Lens among the most competitive sides in French football.
Lens are not walking away empty-handed, either. The move should bring in around 5 million euros, a sizeable fee for a coach and one that gives the club a strong platform to plan ahead.
And they are already planning ahead. Once Sage’s exit is formally confirmed, Lens can accelerate their search for a replacement. Olivier Pantaloni’s name keeps coming up and could quickly become the club’s top target.
The biggest test of his career
For Sage, the time has come to go up a level.
Moving from Ligue 1 to the Premier League is never just a change of scene. It means more pace, more pressure and far more scrutiny. Every weekend feels like a final exam, and every call gets picked apart around the world.
That is exactly what makes the move so intriguing.
At 47, the French coach is about to join a different bracket entirely. The sort of manager who can survive and thrive in the world’s most watched league. If the deal is completed in the next few hours, Pierre Sage will not just be joining Crystal Palace. He’ll be stepping into a whole new phase of his career.
