Provedel heads to Inter as Lazio lose their last line of defence
It is official as of Wednesday. Ivan Provedel has left Lazio Rome and joined Inter Milan on a three-year deal, running until 2029. The move was wrapped up for 3 million euros, a fee that looks close to a bargain when you consider the man they have landed.
At 32, Provedel will be at the 10th club of his career, all in Italy. A career spent entirely at home, from the youth ranks at Udinese and Chievo Verona to the top end of Serie A. He has never left the country, and, by the look of it, the country has never really let him go either.

Sommer’s exit leaves a job to do
To understand why Inter had to move on this one, you have to go back to the summer departures. Yann Sommer left the Nerazzurri on a free, leaving a gap between the posts that the Milan club had to fill. Josep Martinez is there and expected to take over as No 1. But behind him, they needed someone reliable, seasoned and calm enough to step in without the drama if the starter is out.
Provedel ticks every box. Serie A’s best goalkeeper in 2022-2023, 146 appearances in Lazio colours, a Champions League pedigree: it’s a serious CV, even for a back-up role.
Try it for $0.99.
146 games, one goal and one night for the ages
There is something easy to like about Provedel’s spell at Lazio. Four seasons, 146 matches, metronomic consistency at a club that has not always made life simple for its players. But what everyone will remember is that night in September 2023 in the Champions League.
Matchday one of the group stage, Lazio against Atletico Madrid. The score was 1-1. And the Lazio scorer? The goalkeeper. Ivan Provedel, sent up for a corner in stoppage time, powered the ball into the net and snatched a point for his team. A keeper scoring in the Champions League is the sort of scene that goes around the world in hours, and sometimes it is enough to sum up a whole career. His is not defined by that alone, but it is hard not to return to it.

An international who has never actually played
There is one oddity in the Provedel story worth pointing out. The keeper has been called up regularly by the national team, named in squads, kept in the picture. But to this day, he has never played an official match for Italy. Always there, never selected. Recognised, never handed the shirt. That is the cruel lot of top-level back-ups in a country that spent years with Donnarumma as the unmovable reference point between the posts.
At Inter, the script is much the same on paper. No 2 behind Martinez, ready to step in without being the first name on anyone’s lips. But at 32, with that record and all that experience, Provedel is not arriving as a bit-part player. He is arriving as cover, as insurance for a side with big ambitions.
For 3 million euros, Inter may have pulled off the quietest steal of the summer window.
