Reyna gets out of Germany

Giovanni Reyna is a Strasbourg player. The United States midfielder signed a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 side on Tuesday, closing a year at Borussia Monchengladbach that never got going. Strasbourg paid a reported 3 million euros, with bonuses able to push it to 4 million. Gladbach kept a 10 percent slice of the next sale.

A career looking for a reset

One goal in 20 games. That was Reyna’s Bundesliga return after Gladbach signed him from Borussia Dortmund last summer. Dortmund had been home since his teens, but injuries and a fight for minutes wore the relationship down. Germany stopped working for him a while ago.

Strasbourg offers something different. The club has built around young players under its Chelsea-linked ownership, and Reyna, at 23, walks into a project that wants him on the pitch rather than watching from it.

The national team angle

Reyna played every U.S. match at the World Cup and scored in the 4-1 win over Paraguay. Ligue 1 minutes keep him in that picture. A German bench would not have.
