Twenty-three minutes and Foden was gone
Phil Foden went down under pressure from Bruno Fernandes near the touchline. Fernandes, on his way past, kicked him on the backside. Michael Oliver missed it. Foden did not, and his reply was a boot into the Portuguese midfielder’s stomach with the studs showing.
Fernandes stayed down. Foden was still shouting when Oliver reached for his pocket, and the look on his face when the card came out red said he had not seen it coming. Old Trafford stood and applauded him off. It was the first sending-off of his career, and only the second time a Manchester City player has been dismissed in a Premier League Manchester derby. Bernardo Corradi was the first, back in 2006.
The Premier League Match Centre released the exchange with the video room afterwards. “Red card Phil Foden, kick out into the body of Bruno,” Oliver told his colleagues. The reply came back inside seconds: a clear red, a secondary movement, confirmed.

Haaland’s goal, and the check that took an age
City spent the next half hour absorbing pressure and then went ahead anyway. Erling Haaland turned in the opener on the hour mark, and the celebrations had long since died down by the time the goal was actually given.
The video check picked apart two separate questions. Haaland was played onside by Patrick Dorgu. Enzo Fernandez, who attacked the delivery from an offside position with Lisandro Martinez tracking him, was judged not to be interfering with play. One nil to the ten men, in a stadium that had spent forty minutes convinced it was watching a rout build the other way.
United had their moment. Bruno Fernandes threaded a pass into Bryan Mbeumo’s run and Gianluigi Donnarumma got across to smother it. Harry Maguire was booked on 81 minutes chasing an equaliser that never came. Enzo Maresca, cautioned himself in first-half stoppage time, walked off with a result nobody in blue had planned for.
What the red card costs City
Foden now serves a three-match domestic ban that applies across all competitions. He misses Thursday’s EFL Cup third-round tie with Norwich City, Sunderland’s visit to the Etihad on 20 September and the trip to Anfield on 11 October. His next appearance comes against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on 14 October, with a league return against Ipswich Town three days later.
Maresca is already thin out wide, with Jeremy Doku nursing a calf problem that may keep him out until the Sunderland game. Iliman Ndiaye, Allan and Ryan McAidoo all move up the queue for minutes at Carrow Road.
