Football : EFC tops 850 member clubs

Racing Santander takes it over the line

European Football Clubs said on Tuesday it has now passed the 850-member mark. The organisation representing clubs across the continent reached the milestone thanks to the arrival of Racing Santander.

The Spanish side is not the only recent addition. Hull City, FC Groningen, KS Kastrioti and FC Kolkheti Khobi have also joined EFC in recent months.

More than 80 arrivals in a year

The pace has picked up. The organisation says more than 80 clubs have signed up over the past 12 months.

The message is clear enough. EFC is pushing a claim to speak for more than just the biggest names in the game. The clubs mentioned in recent weeks tell the story: a second-tier Spanish side, a club from England outside the top flight, a mid-table Dutch outfit, plus teams from Albania and Georgia.

The gap between that and the old image of a closed shop for Europe’s heavyweights is hard to miss.

Clout that matters in negotiations

Behind the number is a governance battle. The more members EFC has, the louder its voice gets in talks over the calendar, competitions and how football money is split across Europe.

The organisation has already taken public stances on several institutional issues in recent months. This latest milestone gives it another card to play with the authorities.
