Columbus Crew celebrate a penalty shootout win over Pumas in the Leagues Cup

Football: Columbus Crew go top of Leagues Cup on penalties

Karumanchi strikes early

Columbus Crew moved to the top of the Leagues Cup MLS table on Tuesday, edging Pumas UNAM 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at home. Tarun Karumanchi headed the Crew in front in the ninth minute, rising to meet a corner for his first goal in Columbus colours.

Pumas pushed back and drew level right before the break. Álvaro Angulo finished in the 45th minute to send the sides in tied at 1-1. The visitors then handed Columbus a numerical edge in the 72nd minute when Luciano Herrera collected a straight red card, leaving Pumas to defend the final stretch a man light.

Camacho leads the shootout

Neither side broke through again, so the game went to penalties. Rudy Camacho beat Keylor Navas from the spot and Giaccone converted as Columbus held their nerve. Pedro Vite answered for Pumas, but the Crew closed it out 3-2 to bank the extra tournament point.

The night carried an edge. Pumas committed 14 fouls and collected five yellow cards to go with the red, while Columbus picked up a single caution. Crew interim head coach Laurent Courtois made his frustration plain afterward, calling the officiating “really poor on that side.”

Where the Crew stand

The result lifted Columbus to eight points and first place among MLS clubs in the Leagues Cup, keeping them unbeaten through the group phase. The shootout win adds the bonus point that often decides who advances, and it hands Courtois a marker of progress as he steadies the side.
