Football: Colorado blank Sporting KC as two reds bite

Two goals, two red cards, one clean sheet

Colorado beat Sporting Kansas City 2-0 on Saturday in Commerce City. Reggie Cannon opened the scoring in the 65th minute. Rafael Navarro closed it in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time. Between and around those goals, Sporting KC lost two men.

Youssef Maziz created the first. He came on as a second-half substitute, made his MLS debut, and swung a corner to the back post that Cannon headed inside the near post. Paxten Aaronson supplied the second, releasing Navarro, who sealed his defender and finished left-footed.

Colorado owned the ball

The Rapids held 75 percent of possession and won the corner count 8-2. Nico Hansen made three saves for his fourth clean sheet of the season. Stefan Cleveland made two at the other end.

Hansen earned that shutout. Calvin Harris got behind the Colorado back line in the 87th minute and went one on one. Hansen rushed out to close the angle and Harris struck the post. Earlier, in the 28th minute, Harris had tried his luck from outside the box and Hansen gathered it. Dejan Joveljic then attacked from the wing and forced another save.

Colorado created before they scored. Aaronson drove a restart from 30 yards that came back off the crossbar, and Rob Holding’s header on the rebound bounced out of play.

Sporting KC keep leaking

Kwaku Agyabeng went off in the 38th minute for a two-footed challenge from behind on Miguel Navarro. Moises Mosquera followed him in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, hauling down Cannon on a clean run at goal. Zorhan Bassong had already been booked in the 30th minute for a dangerous challenge on Rafael Navarro.

The result leaves Colorado at 8-10-1 and 25 points, with three straight home wins behind them. Sporting KC sit at 4-12-2 and 14 points. They have lost three in a row, and all three were shutouts.
