Football: CAF ditches four-year AFCON, biennial cycle is back

A U-turn after less than a year

The Africa Cup of Nations will be played every two years again. The CAF executive committee backed the reversal unanimously, the confederation said, undoing a decision taken only last December to move the tournament to a four-year cycle and launch an African Nations League alongside it.

The reason is money. The CAF argues the new competition would have needed several years to generate enough revenue to fund the growth of African football. President Patrice Motsepe framed the move as protecting the interests of the 54 member associations and of African players at clubs outside the continent.

The calendar through 2033

Nothing changes for the next tournament, which stays in 2027 and goes to Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. After that comes an edition in 2028, then 2031 and 2033. The three-year gap between 2028 and 2031 exists so the AFCON does not land in the same year as the 2030 World Cup.

The decision lands with one major question from the last edition still open. L’Equipe reports that the Court of Arbitration for Sport will rule at the end of November on the fate of the Morocco-Senegal final.
