Arsenal are through to the Champions League final. Tuesday night’s 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid was enough to send the English club through.

The London side had not been back at this stage of the competition since 2006, when they lost to Barcelona. Arsenal will now face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final in Budapest. The match also marked Antoine Griezmann’s final European appearance in an Atletico shirt.

The first half and the goal

Both teams started cautiously, with defence the priority. Arsenal had most of the ball in the opening minutes, but the Spaniards were the first to threaten. Julian Alvarez tested the keeper in the 8th minute, with Giuliano Simeone following suit three minutes later.

The deadlock was broken just before half-time. In the 45th minute, William Saliba picked out Viktor Gyokeres on the right flank. His cross found Leandro Trossard, whose shot was parried by Jan Oblak. Bukayo Saka reacted quickest and tucked away the rebound.

London’s defence holds firm after the break

Atletico had to respond after the restart. They pushed forward with more intent, but their finishing was all over the place. Antoine Griezmann wasted a chance in the 56th minute. From the same move, VAR did not award him a penalty. Alexander Sorloth also passed up a clear opening in the 86th minute.

Arsenal’s back line never cracked. They even carved out another chance to kill it off. From a Piero Hincapie cross, Viktor Gyokeres fired wide in the 66th minute. The score stayed at 1-0 until the referee’s final whistle.
