A fresh engine, and a long climb back
Mercedes made the call before its most symbolic race of the year. Kimi Antonelli will get a brand new engine in his W17 at Monza. The penalty is automatic: he will start from the back of the grid in front of his home fans in Italy.
The parts tally left no room to manoeuvre. Twelve races into a season that runs to 23, the 20-year-old has already used up his allowance on four of the seven power unit elements. Fourth internal combustion engine out of four allowed. Fourth exhaust out of four. Third energy store out of three. Third control electronics unit out of three.
Put it off any longer and Mercedes would have been gambling on a failure later in the season. Better to take the hit now.

Wolff stands by the decision
Toto Wolff did not dress it up. “For us, Monza starts with a challenge. Kimi will take a power unit penalty and start from the back of the grid,” said the Mercedes boss.
“It’s disappointing for him and for the fans who want to see him fighting at the front in his home race, but this sport does not reward sentiment. When you make decisions that help the championship push, sometimes you pay a short-term price.”
The message is simple. “The aim is clear: gain as many places as possible and maximise the points.” Antonelli still holds a 59-point lead over team-mate George Russell, who sits second in the standings, despite the recent drought in wins since Spa.
Monza offers chances, but it is no soft touch
The layout does suit recovery drives. Overtaking is still possible, and a fresh engine is a big weapon on the long straights.
Wolff did, though, flag a wrinkle created by the current regulations. “Monza is a low-energy circuit, you spend much of the lap asking a lot of the power unit and you do not get many chances to recharge the battery,” he explained. “That creates compromises which have to be managed carefully.”
In other words, raw pace alone will not do it. Energy management will decide the comeback.
