A goal off the hip and a whole lot of graft
Everton beat Ipswich 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium to stretch their unbeaten start to the season. The goal came in the 11th minute, and luck played a big part in it. James Tarkowski let fly from distance, the ball struck Thierno Barry and Christian Walton went the wrong way. Goal for the French striker, the first of the match.
Barry could have doubled the lead before the break. Unmarked at the far post, he headed inches wide.
Ipswich had their moments. Emersonn failed to hit the target with a header from a Jack Clarke cross, with Jordan Pickford left exposed. Soon after, Leif Davis got in behind the defence to meet an Abdul Fatawu cross and fluffed his finish from six yards.

VAR, then the red card
The Tractor Boys came out after the break a different side. Two efforts in five minutes tested Pickford, first from Julio Enciso at the near post, then from Abdoul Ouattara from distance.
On the hour, Barry thought he had his second from a corner. VAR stepped in and the goal was ruled out for interference with Walton.
Ipswich did not get long to breathe. Fatawu was sent off for a second yellow after diving. Down to ten, the visitors still had a late chance to level it, but Dewsbury-Hall headed wide after a Tyler Dibling cross.
Five straight, and O’Neil still cannot solve Moyes
The stat of the day is all about the managers. David Moyes has now beaten Gary O’Neil five times in a row in head-to-head meetings. That sort of run starts to get into people’s heads.
Everton move up to fifth and stay unbeaten in the league. Talk of a return to Europe is growing louder on Merseyside. The win also ended a run of three straight draws.
There is one note of caution. This was only Everton’s second win in six league games at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and Tarkowski, named man of the match, spent a good deal of the second half defending a one-goal lead against ten men.
