Nine big league games, and already in the record book
Ethan Salas has been a major leaguer for barely two weeks. Overnight in Denver he hit the first two home runs of his career, drove in three, and walked off with a 9-3 Padres win over the Colorado Rockies.
At 20 years and 107 days, the Venezuelan catcher became the youngest player at his position in MLB history to put together a multi-homer game, per MLB.com. The league dates to 1876. Catcher is also the last place clubs rush a young bat, because the defensive workload behind the plate tends to eat prospects alive. Salas had appeared in nine games since debuting on September 2.
He went deep in the second, hitting at the top of the order. The second one came in the fifth off Nick Frasso and pushed San Diego out to 8-1.

Nine wins in 10, and a wild-card spot that will not sit still
San Diego are 83-69 and have taken nine of their last 10. That run has them third in the National League wild-card picture, a game behind the Philadelphia Phillies and a game and a half back of the Chicago Cubs, who lead it.
Robbie Ray gave them six innings and carried a one-hitter into the sixth. He wound up charged with three runs on three hits, struck out six, and moved to 13-8. Jackson Merrill collected three hits. Samad Taylor, Jake Cronenworth and Dustin Harris had two apiece.
56-96, and the Rockies keep sinking
Colorado have now lost nine of 10 as well, which is the kind of symmetry nobody wants. Their record sits at 56-96. Kyle Karros got something out of the night with his 12th homer of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth.
Starter Adams wore the rest of it: six runs on eight hits across four and a third. San Diego head into the closing weeks of the regular season with a playoff berth being decided a game at a time, and a 20-year-old catcher batting leadoff.
