Twenty years and 107 days
Ethan Salas had never hit a home run in the major leagues. By the end of Wednesday night in Denver he had two, and a line in the record book that belongs to him alone. At 20 years and 107 days old, the San Diego catcher became the youngest player at his position in MLB history to hit two homers in a game, according to MLB.com.
The first came leading off the second inning and pushed the Padres ahead 3-1. The second landed in the fifth, a two-run shot off Nick Frasso that broke the game open. Three runs batted in, three of the nine San Diego scored in a 9-3 win, from a player who made his major league debut on September 2. This was his ninth game.

Ray keeps Colorado quiet
Robbie Ray allowed one hit through five innings. Kyle Karros got to him in the sixth for a two-run homer, the 12th of the season for the Colorado infielder, but the margin was long gone by then. Ray finished with six strikeouts over six innings, three runs on three hits, and moved to 13-8.
The Padres built it early. A sacrifice fly and a Jake Cronenworth single made it 2-0 in the first, Adael Amador answered with a bases-loaded groundout, and Dustin Harris tripled in the fourth. The fifth ended the night of Rockies starter Adams, charged with six runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. Jackson Merrill singled, Xander Bogaerts walked, Samad Taylor drove in two with a single, and Salas followed with his second homer to make it 8-1. Ty France added an RBI double in the sixth.
Merrill finished with three hits. Taylor, Cronenworth and Harris had two each.
What it changes
San Diego is 83-69 with ten games left and has won nine of its last ten. The Padres hold the third National League wild-card spot, one game behind Philadelphia and a game and a half behind the Chicago Cubs at the top of that group. Every one of those ten games now carries weight, and the catcher taking them on turned 20 in June.
Colorado dropped to 56-96 and has lost nine of its last ten.
