NCAAF: Ethan Davis out for the season with a torn ACL

A touchdown, then the knee

He opened the scoring with a touchdown. A 25-yard strike from Faizon Brandon with 12:22 left in the first quarter. On his home turf in Atlanta.

A few plays later, Ethan Davis was off the Georgia Tech field. Torn ACL. Season over.

Josh Heupel confirmed it on Monday. Tennessee’s starting tight end won’t play again this year, even after the Volunteers’ 45-24 win on Saturday.

A coach who knows the script

“I feel for Ethan, for the work he’s put in, for the growth he’s made as a person and as a player, and for having his season cut short,” Heupel said. “But the next guy has to be ready and take his shot.”

Two games, two touchdowns for Davis this season. A strong start for a 6-foot-5, 247-pound senior who had waited a long time for this moment.

Too long, maybe. Broken collarbone in 2023. Shoulder nerve issue in 2025. And now this knee.

Three injuries in three years, and 39 catches to show for it

In 26 games for Tennessee since 2023, Davis has 39 catches, 433 yards and six touchdowns. Decent numbers, stopped in their tracks three separate times.

The Volunteers are 2-0 and sit 15th in the national rankings. They host Kennesaw State on Saturday night in Knoxville. Then comes Texas, the country’s No. 1 team, on September 26 in their SEC opener. That is where Davis’s absence will really bite.
