Four maps, one ticket
LYON topped the LCS Summer Split regular season. A few hours ago they lost their grip on the playoff bracket anyway.
Cloud9 beat them 3-1 in the upper-bracket semifinal and booked a place in the bracket final on Sept. 27. LYON drop into the lower-bracket semifinal and now face an elimination match on Sept. 26.
The series was settled on red side. Cloud9 took the opener in 41 minutes, LYON hit back in 43, then Cloud9 closed it out with a 44-minute grind and a 25-minute rout on blue.

Thanatos sets the pace
Park “Thanatos” Seung-gyu carried the scoreline for Cloud9, finishing with an 18-5-24 kill-death-assist line across the four maps. Nobody on LYON came close to matching him. Kang “Saint” Seong-in was the only player on the losing roster to avoid a negative kill-death ratio, posting 10 kills against 10 deaths with 16 assists.
Cloud9 now wait on the second upper-bracket semifinal between Team Liquid and FlyQuest. Liquid finished the regular season second behind LYON, and those two were the only sides handed byes straight into the playoff semifinals. One of them is already in the lower bracket.
What is actually at stake
The Summer Split opened on July 25 with eight teams and a seven-week round robin, every side meeting every other once in a best-of-three. The bottom two were cut. The remaining six went into a double-elimination bracket that runs through to the final in October.
The top three finishers qualify for the League of Legends World Championship, a $5 million event scheduled for Oct. 15 to Nov. 14. Fourth and fifth place get spots at the Demacia Cup Global Invitational in China from Oct. 3-17, worth $223,000.
Shopify Rebellion, who reverse-swept Sentinels on Friday to stay alive, play in the lower-bracket quarterfinals this coming Friday. Whoever wins that gets LYON in the semifinal, which leaves the regular-season leaders one bad series away from being knocked out by a team that finished well below them.
