Ligue 2: Ekitike gets a warm ovation on his Reims return

Auguste-Delaune remembers

Hugo Ekitike was back in Reims on Monday night. The Liverpool forward had taken his seat at Auguste-Delaune for the Ligue 2 meeting between Stade de Reims and Annecy. The home fans gave him a round of applause before kick-off.

He didn’t just sit there and watch. Drumsticks in hand, he joined in with the noise from the stands. The moment was aired by beIN Sports. Reims then won 3-1.

Eight months out, and still no date

Ekitike hasn’t played since April. His Achilles rupture kept him out all summer. It also ruled him out of the 2026 World Cup with France.

A return to action is not expected before the end of 2026. Early 2027 remains a realistic possibility. The striker is working to get his feel back, with no public date set.

The clock is already ticking past eight months on the sidelines. Injuries like this rarely reward impatience.

Reims, the club where he made his name

Ekitike wore the Reims shirt from 2019 to 2022. That was where he broke through at the top level. His 2021-2022 season remains his benchmark in Champagne: 11 goals and 5 assists in 27 matches.

Those numbers opened the door to Paris Saint-Germain, then the Bundesliga, and then the Premier League. Reims are now in Ligue 2. The bond, though, hasn’t changed.
