Two clubs, two different kinds of pain
Houston and Sporting Kansas City meet Saturday night sitting nowhere near each other in the standings, yet both arrive nursing real frustration. The Dynamo are 13-8-5 for 44 points, part of a three-way tie for second in the Western Conference, but they let a two-goal lead slip in a 2-2 draw with Cincinnati last week after conceding in stoppage time. “Anytime you’re up 2-0 at home, you need to see the game out,” coach Ben Olsen said.
Kansas City’s problems run far deeper. At 5-17-3 for 18 points, Sporting KC owns the worst record in MLS, a fact coach Raphael Wicky isn’t hiding from. “We have to keep believing,” he said. “Everyone needs to keep doing the dirty work. That’s what will win you games.”

An offense finally waking up
There’s a number worth watching here: Kansas City has scored three goals in each of its last three matches, including a 3-1 win over LAFC and a 4-3 loss to Philadelphia. It’s a rare offensive stretch for a team built around damage limitation this season, and defender Wyatt Meyer, who scored his first MLS goal last week, wants it to translate into results. “It’s good to celebrate some of the good stuff, too,” Meyer said, before adding that Kansas City’s defense still has to catch up. Midfielder Kwaku Agyabeng framed it simply: “Just learn from mistakes. You just have to come and put that behind you. Then you focus on what’s in front of you.”
Houston has history and form on its side
The Dynamo have won only once in their last six matches, but their most recent meeting with Kansas City went their way, a 2-0 result on Aug. 1 built on goals from Guilherme and Agustin Bouzat. Guilherme has 14 goals this season, two of them in the last three matches, and goalkeeper Jonathan Bond was central to keeping the last result respectable. Houston hasn’t conceded more than two goals in a match since May 13, a run of defensive stability Kansas City’s revived attack will test directly. Olsen isn’t dwelling on the Cincinnati letdown. “Let’s learn from that moment,” he said. “Hopefully get after KC.”
