A blunt warning
Friday. Turkey v France. Zidane’s first game in charge of Les Bleus. And straight away, there’s a voice cutting through the noise. Christophe Dugarry has not held back on Kylian Mbappe. “He’s going to have to wake up, Mbappe… do you want us to win or just score your goals and show off?” The message is clear.
The 1998 World Cup winner has never been one for soft words. He’s pointing to a record he clearly thinks is not good enough. No trophy with Real Madrid. No title with France either, despite the numbers. Mbappe scores. Plenty. But France are still waiting.

The weight of a collective drought
It’s been years. A World Cup final lost on penalties in 2022. Another disappointment in 2026. No major silverware since Euro 2000, which is a lifetime ago for some of the younger supporters. Dugarry is laying it out without sugar-coating it. In his view, Mbappe’s individual responsibility as captain and the team’s best player cannot be hidden by the goals.
The backdrop hardly helps settle anything. Zidane arrives after Deschamps’ departure. A new era. A side to rebuild, on the pitch and in the head. The trip to Turkey, hostile as ever, already looks like a proper test for the new regime.
Mbappe, alone under the spotlight
Left wing, his patch. Mbappe will have to answer on the pitch. Dugarry’s words won’t be ignored in the dressing room. Or in the stands. France need wins. Fast. And Mbappe, more than ever, finds himself right at the centre of that pressure.
This isn’t Dugarry’s first dig at the France captain. A pundit for years now, the former Bordeaux man has made a habit of playing the contrarian. This isn’t a cheap shot, between the lines. It’s more a reminder. Mbappe wears the armband. He also carries, whether he likes it or not, part of the burden of a generation still without a major crown.
Now it falls to the main man to respond. A win on Friday would probably quieten the critics. A poor result, though, would only crank up the noise. Zidane will watch it all unfold from the dugout for the first time as coach.
