NFL: Drew Lock starts in Arizona as Darnold is ruled out

Five plays

That is how long Sam Darnold lasted before his season came apart.

The Seahawks quarterback went down with a glute injury on the fifth snap of the 13-10 win over New England on Wednesday, September 9. Team staff describe it as a soft-tissue problem they rarely see. The immediate consequence is simple enough: no Darnold on Sunday in Glendale against the Cardinals.

Seattle has not offered a return date. The club has also kept him off injured reserve, which at least leaves the door ajar for something sooner rather than later.

“The best backup quarterback in the league”

Drew Lock gets the job, with Jalen Milroe behind him. It is his first start since his spell with the Giants in 2024.

He earned it last week. Coming off the bench, Lock erased a 10-point hole: 16 of 22, 187 yards, and a 45-yard touchdown to Jaxon Smith-Njigba on fourth-and-1.

Mike Macdonald did not deliberate long. “Drew is a proven player, really good in this league. When he has been the starter, he has played some very good football,” the head coach said.

Leonard Williams put it more bluntly, calling Lock “the best backup quarterback in the league”. In fairness to the defensive tackle, his own unit did most of the work that night. Drake Maye threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter alone, the last of them picked off by Josh Jobe in the end zone with a minute left.

Two Notre Dame running backs, one afternoon

Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price shared a backfield in South Bend. They are also the only two running backs taken in the first round of this year’s draft. Sunday puts them on opposite sidelines.

Love, the No. 3 pick, has 11 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown so far. Price went 32nd and has 10 carries for 52 yards in Seattle.

The rest of the Seahawks injury sheet is not encouraging. Cooper Kupp (back), Nick Emmanwori (ankle and hip), Anthony Bradford and Josh Jones (knee) were all limited on Wednesday. Ty Okada did not practise.
